The death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej has thrown Thailand back into a turbulent of political uncertainty. He was seen as a unifying father figure by many during his reign, and provided stability to a country that experienced more than a dozen military coups since he came into power in 1946. However, his role has sparked worldwide controversy, as critics argued he endorsed military takeovers and failed to speak out against human rights abuses.
